Surlyn – material of the future
Surlyn is one of the most prospective materials in skin care packaging production. It possesses all the properties that are important to obtain an ideal cosmetic package – it has the transparency of glass, is light and unbreakable. Designers value Surlyn for the opportunity to create unrestricted shapes and forms that are not obtainable using glass. DuPont chemical corporation, the producer and supplier of Surlyn, has created a material that helps reduce the manufacturing process to a single-stage operation. Besides the aesthetic and practical benefits of Surlyn ionomer resin, we should also mention the higher profitability and efficiency of production compared to other materials available on the market.
Jars made of Surlyn look modern and attractive. Surlyn cosmetic packaging is produced using injection moulding technology. It offers a wider range of design options and allows for optimising costs and reducing production time.
Surlyn is available in colourless or mass dyed form. The process of mass dyeing allows obtaining various decorative effects, such as:
– marble effect,
– photochromic effect (reversible colour change under the influence of light)
– thermochromic effect (reversible colour change under the influence of temperature)
– shimmering particles effect,
– pearl gloss effect,
– fluorescence effect,
– UV-fluorescent effect.
Surlyn packaging is chosen by the most distinguished cosmetic brands in the world. These packages attract attention and emphasize the product position. Among examples of this kind of packaging, it is worth mentioning the hexagonal HEXAGON jar or the low-profile, round ORION, qualified for the final of the Good Design 2016 competition in the category “Applied graphics and packaging”.
Surlyn is distinguished for its ideal transparency and clarity. The reliable mechanical properties of this material make it ideal for the production of packaging, not only for exclusive cosmetic products but also the premium segment.
However, the true capabilities of Surlyn in terms of the sophistication of form are demonstrated in the cream jar made for Awantys. Eve’laor cream has been specially designed for the Middle East countries. In order for the product to meet the expectations of consumers from this part of the world, it must be solid as well as effective and attract attention.
The jar looks like a cut diamond that lets you see through it into the golden interior. The jar body and cap are connected by a golden ring with Swarovski crystals and brand logo. The General Manager of Awantys admits that they have been using Surlyn for years in package design and he sees no alternative that would equally perfectly combine clarity, aesthetics and luxury of packaging. – Surlyn additionally offers the degree of chemical inertness necessary for perfume and cosmetic packaging. This material gives us complete freedom of conceptualisation and lets us broaden the limits of design – he added.
36 walls of Eve’laor jar were made of Surlyn PC 2000 – the only material that ensures the clarity of glass and the possibility of creating sharp edges. Thanks to this, the light perfectly penetrates into the middle of the package highlighting the true glow of the golden body. The Eve’laor jar was presented at the latest LuxePack Fairs in Monaco, in September 2016.
